Carrick under pressure after Bournemouth loss

Carrick under pressure after Bournemouth loss

Michael Carrick has come under intense pressure at Man Utd after the Red Devils were beaten 3‑0 by Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday in the Premier League. The defeat followed a 4‑1 loss to Serie A side Como in the Champions League, leaving the club eight matches winless and his Tuesday training role in doubt.

Bournemouth’s dominant performance saw them score three times without reply, exposing defensive frailties that have plagued Man Utd this season. The result extended the winless run and intensified calls for a change in the dugout.

Champions League setback fuels pressure

In the mid‑week Champions League tie, Como overturned expectations by winning 4‑1 against the Red Devils, a Serie A side that had been expected to dominate. The heavy defeat added to the mounting criticism of Carrick’s tactics and left the squad demoralised.

Now eight matches across all competitions have passed without a win, prompting speculation that the upcoming clash with the Cherries could be Carrick’s last as Red Devils head coach. Sources close to the club say Eddie Howe is the leading contender to replace him at Old Trafford.

Other names linked with the vacancy include Julian Nagelsmann, Unai Emery and Antonio Conte, although the club has not yet taken formal action against Carrick. The uncertainty has created a tense atmosphere among players and staff.

Inside the crisis talks

Chris Wheeler shared on X that Carrick spent three hours at Carrington on Monday, watching a friendly against Hull City while owners and executives held ‘crisis talks’. He added that players are due back for training on Tuesday, but it remains unclear if Carrick will lead the session, with Howe and Nagelsmann mentioned as options.

Reports suggest director of football Jason Wilcox has been championing Howe’s name, whereas director of recruitment Christopher Vivell appears to prefer the ex‑Germany and Bayern Munich boss Nagelsmann. Their differing preferences have added another layer to the internal debate.

pundit Jeff Stelling warned that many names are being bandied around, but stressed that “it’s NOT Howe” who should bear the blame. He argued that figures such as Jason Wilcox, Omar Berrada, Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazers are also responsible for the club’s current predicament.
