Bayern emulates Real Madrid's transfer model – Sauer explains the shift
In the first part of the extensive interviews, Jochen Sauer, who has been in senior positions in the youth department of FC Bayern since 2017, talks about a shift in thinking triggered by Angelo Stiller and Kenan Yildiz, about the importance of sell‑on clauses, and about the remarkable rise of Bara Ndiaye, while Bayern mirrors Real Madrid's specific transfer strategy.
Sauer on the Campus and His Responsibilities
On the way to Jochen Sauer's office at the FC Bayern Campus, one passes a corridor where numerous jerseys hang – on one side the most famous home‑grown talents such as Jamal Musiala and Aleksandar Pavlovic, on the other the newest professional debutants. Thanks to Vincent Kompany's trust in the youth, a shortage of space arises here, underscoring the importance of the academy.
Successes and Financial Impact
The 54‑year‑old Sauer moved from RB Salzburg to FC Bayern in 2017 and has since been Director of Development as well as Managing Director of Red&Gold Football, the club’s international network. He explains that the combination of ever more talents becoming professionals such as Musiala, Pavlovic, Josip Stanisic or Lennart Karl, and the high revenues from players who do not make the breakthrough, creates financial resources that can be reinvested into youth work and transfers.
Uli Hoeneß said at the campus opening: “Perhaps this is FC Bayern’s answer to the transfer frenzy.” Nine years later, Sauer wonders whether this answer actually works, and emphasizes that the two mentioned factors form the basis.
FC Bayern’s free‑transfer loss of Kenan Yildiz sparks academy overhaul
After Lennart Karl’s breakthrough and the revenues from the summer sale of home‑grown talents, including Bara Ndiaye’s rise, the management is satisfied. Sauer recalls a half‑joking conversation with Hoeneß, in which he was asked about the next Bayern player and explained that time is needed in the youth sector, especially during a complete restart.
Comparison with Real Madrid’s Transfer Model
The campus infrastructure was initially in need of improvement: three teams trained on the same pitch, all coaches shared an open‑plan office, and modern facilities were lacking. The new construction allowed new structures to be created, paving the way for today’s track record.
A first major step was the 2020 3. Liga championship, in which Musiala, Stiller, Malik Tillman, Joshua Zirkzee and Chris Richards played, laying the foundation for the current generation. Stiller, who moved on a free transfer to TSG Hoffenheim in 2021 and became a national team player there, together with Kenan Yildiz, sparked a rethink in FC Bayern’s permeability and transfer strategies.
