FC Bayern’s free‑transfer loss of Kenan Yildiz sparks academy overhaul

FC Bayern’s free‑transfer loss of Kenan Yildiz sparks academy overhaul

In the quiet of the Bayern training ground, the absence of 21‑year‑old Kenan Yildiz is felt keenly; the former academy prodigy now stars for Juventus Turin after leaving the club on a free transfer in 2022.

Why Bayern could not retain Yildiz

Yildiz spent eleven years in Bayern’s youth system before, at the age of seventeen, he moved to Juventus Turin without a transfer fee. Jochen Sauer, the club’s development boss, explained that the senior squad could not accommodate three seventeen‑year‑old attacking players simultaneously, citing Paul Wanner and Arijon Ibrahimovic as fellow prospects.

"The professional squad did not allow three seventeen‑year‑old forwards to train together, and the impending transfer of Mathys Tel was already on the horizon," Sauer told SPOX. "Juventus promised Yildiz a place in the professional training group, which we could not match at that time, so he made the right decision for himself."

Wider impact on the academy

The departure, Sauer added, prompted Bayern to optimise the flow between youth and senior levels, a topic first raised when Angelo Stiller left on a free move to TSG Hoffenheim in 2021. He noted that Yildiz’s rapid rise at Juventus confirmed that a Bayern U19 player can succeed at a top international club.

Since then, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Lennart Karl have broken into the first team, while many other academy graduates debuted under Vincent Kompany last season. Sauer, who joined Bayern from RB Salzburg in 2017, now serves as director of development and co‑manages the Red&Gold Football network.

Yildiz, currently sidelined with a foot fracture, remains a key figure for Juventus and the Turkish national team, and his market value now exceeds that of his former Bayern peers Wanner, Ibrahimovic and Tel.
