Bayern battle past Freiburg to honour Kompany’s fight

Bayern Munich secured a hard‑fought 3‑1 victory at Freiburg on Saturday, a win that kept them level on points with Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga and was dedicated to coach Vincent Kompany, who remains under medical observation.

Bayern maintain title chase

The Bavarians, sometimes referred to as Los, held firm after a tense first half and finished the match with three points, preserving their joint‑lead in the league. Their position now mirrors that of Borussia Dortmund, meaning the title race remains open. Futbol notes that the result was vital for Bayern’s momentum heading into the final months of the season.

Kompany’s health dominates talk

Vincent Kompany’s condition has been a constant backdrop throughout the weekend, with the club openly acknowledging his delicate medical situation. Players and staff dedicated the triumph to him, underscoring the unity within the squad. The gesture highlighted how the coach’s wellbeing has become a rallying point for the team.

Line‑up adjustments and injuries

Numerous absences forced the Bayern side to reshuffle the starting eleven, giving chances to players such as Urbig, Stanišić, Bischoff, Karl and Gnabry. Alphonso Davies began the game on the bench despite featuring in the recent Arsenal clash, while Harry Kane returned to lead the attack. Michael Olise, a Bayern midfielder, also featured and created a notable chance from the edge of the box.

Dayot Upamecano broke the deadlock early in the second quarter, first blocking a shot from Beste and then advancing to meet Backhaus one‑on‑one, scoring to give Bayern the lead. His contribution demonstrated his dual defensive and offensive capabilities, providing the team with much‑needed confidence.

Serge Gnabry doubled the advantage before halftime, exploiting a run behind the Freiburg defence to finish from a back‑heel pass. The German forward’s movement created space for Lennart Karl, who also attempted to increase the margin, but it was Gnabry who restored the two‑goal cushion at the 42nd minute.

Freiburg’s response intensified when Bischof inadvertently scored an own‑goal while attempting to clear a cross from Makengo, narrowing the deficit. The mistake revived the home side’s hopes and led to a flurry of attacks, with Urbig making a spectacular save from a Ginter header in added time.

In the closing stages, Urbig’s intervention and disciplined defending ensured Bayern held on for the three points. The victory not only secures their place in the upper echelons of the Bundesliga table but also serves as a morale boost amid concerns over Kompany’s health.
