Augsburg's debutant Hennes Behrens credits Klopp for extra joy

Augsburgs DFB-Debütant Hennes Behrens (Augsburg's DFB debutant Hennes Behrens) stepped onto the pitch at the WWK ARENA and described the moment as "extremely fun". The 21‑year‑old left‑back of FC Augsburg made his first appearance for the German national team under new boss Jürgen Klopp.

Behrens was one of ten newcomers named in Klopp's initial 44‑man squad. The squad was assembled for the Nations League match against Greece, where Germany suffered a 0‑1 home defeat.

Debut and Klopp’s impact

Coming on as a joker, Behrens played only a short spell but felt the occasion deeply. He told, "It was extremely fun to give my debut here at home in Augsburg. I also had some actions in the short time, even if we could not create much pressure forward."

He praised Klopp as a "total people‑catcher", adding, "Whether you are a starter or a reserve, he gives everyone a really good feeling, brings everyone to his side, gives confidence and security."

Transfer history and market value

In the summer, Behrens moved from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim to FC Augsburg for €3.5 million. The latest Bundesliga market‑value update lifted his worth from €5 million to €8 million.

During the second half of the 2025/26 season he spent time on loan at relegated 1. FC Heidenheim, gaining valuable minutes.

Behrens looks up to Philipp Lahm, who earned 113 caps and led Germany to the 2014 World Cup title, and to Nathaniel Brown, who transferred for €50 million to FC Bayern and has ten international appearances.

He hopes to follow Brown’s path, saying, "It would be nice to stay in the national team and add a few more games, but it is important to stay grounded in the present."

The debut also featured fellow newcomers Said El Mala (1. FC Köln), Jonas Urbig (FC Bayern), Philipp Treu, Yannik Engelhardt and Derry Scherhant (all SC Freiburg), Bambasé Conté (TSG Hoffenheim), Younes Ebnoutalib (Eintracht Frankfurt), Mika Baur (Celtic) and Vitaly Janelt (FC Brentford).
