Bologna's transfer of Matteo Darmian after Emil Holm's injury
Matteo Darmian, a 36‑year‑old right‑back, has signed a contract with FC Bologna until 2027 after his contract with Inter Milan ended. The transfer is a direct response to the serious injury to Emil Holm and will strengthen the team's defence.
The 36‑year‑old right‑back has a market value of €1.4 million and was therefore one of the most valuable unattached full‑backs. At Inter he made 218 appearances, more than any other player in his career there, and won the Italian championship three times as well as the Europa League with Manchester United. Previously he played for FC Schalke 04 and FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga before moving to Inter in 2015. The transfer was officially confirmed on 08 October 2026.
Versatility and Tactical Role
In a club statement it reads: “Darmian is a versatile and reliable player who can operate in several wide positions and, if needed, also play deeper.” His main attributes are solid technique, positional awareness and excellent tactical discipline. Coach Thiago Motta emphasizes that Darmian can be used both as a right‑back and as a left winger when the situation requires it. The club provides him with premium support services to stabilise the defence.

Holm's Absence and Bologna's Response
Following the official announcement, Bologna responded to Emil Holm’s injury with the transfer, whose market value is €10 million and who is expected to be able to play again only next year. Holm suffered an ACL tear in January and will therefore be out for at least a year. In community forums, including gaming and Bundesliga boards, fans are debating the decision intensively. The latest video analysis and all relevant news were published on the club’s website to support the transfer analysis.
The transfers this season illustrate Bologna’s strategy of signing experienced players to strengthen the back line. After the latest market‑value analyses, the club plans to explore additional defensive options. The club hopes that the combination of Darmian and the young talents will keep the defence stable until Holm’s return.
