Aston Villa weigh £43m gamble as Garnacho minutes dwindle clause looms

Villa brought the 22‑year‑old Alejandro Garnacho in on loan in July, hoping the winger would become a regular and trigger the conditional £43 million purchase clause. With only 31 Premier League minutes this season, the club now faces a tough decision about his future.
Loan deal and purchase trigger
The loan includes a conditional obligation to buy valued at around £43 million. At the time of the agreement, Chelsea believed the trigger conditions were relatively easy to meet, expecting the fee to be activated once Garnacho featured regularly.
Appearance clause limits
According to Football Insider, the contract contains an appearance‑based clause that allows Villa to avoid the obligation by limiting how often Garnacho plays. The report says Villa have already decided not to use him enough to automatically trigger the clause, having logged just 31 Premier League minutes.
Unai Emery has struggled to find minutes for the winger, and his performances have been sparse. After Garnacho played 20 minutes in Villa’s 3‑1 European win over Viking, Emery praised the spell, saying: “These were his best minutes with us. It is positive.”
Chelsea clearly do not see Garnacho as part of their long‑term plans and risk a reduced market value if the clause is avoided. The club could see the player return next summer with a lower valuation, creating a fresh transfer headache.
From Villa’s side, committing £43 million to a player who is far from a regular starter is a major investment. Avoiding the clause would be understandable if his struggles continue, as the fee appears disproportionate to his contribution.
The next few weeks are crucial. If Garnacho can build on Emery’s recent praise and force his way into the team, the permanent transfer could still be rescued; if not, Chelsea may be forced to search for a buyer in 2027.
