Arsenal brace for Saka's eight week lay‑off as Arteta rejects burnout

Bukayo Saka, the 25‑year‑old Arsenal winger, will miss six to eight weeks after a thigh injury forced him off ten minutes into the Champions League tie with Bayern Munich on Wednesday, 23 October 2026, while manager Mikel Arteta insisted the player is not headed for career burnout.

Injury details and history

Saka was helped off the pitch by medical staff and now faces a period on the sidelines. The knock marks his 11th injury since September 2024, adding to a prolonged Achilles problem he endured during the World Cup. Arsenal will have to manage his absence carefully given the tight schedule.

Arteta on workload and recovery

Arteta explained that the demands on players have become “immense”, with “the amount of games, the intensity of those matches, the international competitions, the times as well between games are getting narrower”. He highlighted the typical rhythm: “play on Sunday afternoon, then we have to go away, we have to play on Wednesday evening, then we have to play on Saturday”.

He added that clubs often have “less than 66, 67 hours between games”, stressing how compressed the calendar has become.

Arteta called for support from football authorities, saying any assistance “would be as well really appreciated from everybody”. He noted that the same pressures affect every team.

Saka is due for an MRI scan this afternoon after limping off with “quite a lot of fluid in the area”, and Arteta said further scans and specialist opinions are expected “tomorrow”.

The manager warned that a player who “has to walk off the pitch, is struggling to walk without any pain, is restricted to movement” is “not good signs”.

When asked whether the injury could lead to burnout as Saka approaches his 30s, Arteta replied “I don’t have that feeling at all”. He stressed the need to create “the right ecosystem around the player” and to manage his load carefully when he returns.
