Toulouse's defensive void widens as World Cup winner departs
Toulouse FC now confronts a defensive void after the two‑year contract of World Cup winner Djibril Sidibé expired, leaving the Ligue 1 side without the 33‑year‑old who logged 63 appearances and featured in 35 matches last season. His departure comes as the club evaluates its back‑line options for the upcoming campaign.
Sidibé signed for Toulouse FC in the summer of 2024 on a two‑year deal. During his spell he made 63 appearances, scored three goals and contributed seven assists.
His versatility proved valuable to manager Carles Martínez Novell, who deployed him both at centre‑back and right‑back. The defender was an ever‑present figure last season, featuring in 35 games across all competitions.

Before joining Toulouse, Sidibé had spells with AS Monaco, Lille OSC, ESTAC Troyes, Everton and AEK Athens. Sidibé was part of France’s 2018 FIFA World Cup‑winning squad. Toulouse may also lose defender Charlie Cresswell, a former England youth international, who is reportedly in advanced talks with Stade Rennais. Crystal Palace have also shown interest in the former Leeds United defender. Sidibé is now searching for a new club following the expiry of his contract. The defender’s exit adds to the uncertainty surrounding Toulouse’s defensive roster this summer.
