Senegal taps ex-Anderlecht star Cheikhou Kouyaté to steady locker room
On Wednesday, Senegal will face Belgium in the World Cup round of 16, and former Anderlecht captain Cheikhou Kouyaté has been added to the Senegalese technical staff to help keep the dressing‑room united amid recent turmoil. The move follows weeks of unrest over unpaid bonuses, contract talks and logistical complaints.
"I asked to add Cheikhou to the staff," Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw said, explaining that Kouyaté is an important figure for the group because he knows both the older and younger generations of players and can act as a coordinator between the squad and the coach.
Rumours of unpaid World Cup premiums and protracted contract negotiations with Thiaw had the team leaving for Qatar with hours of delay, according to reports from the camp.
Players also complained about the accommodation and catering at the base camp, and strict U.S. visa rules prevented organised Senegalese supporters from travelling, prompting captain Kalidou Koulibaly to voice his frustration publicly.
From Morocco’s class to Cape Verde’s miracle: the World Cup turns African
Earlier this year Senegal lost its African title after a controversial decision by the Confederation of African Football, and the ensuing legal proceedings are still pending. Cheikhou Kouyaté spent 2009 to 2014 at Anderlecht, becoming a fan favourite in the Jupiler Pro League, and after a loan spell at KV Kortrijk he secured a regular place in the Brussels side and emerged as one of its leaders. Under coach Besnik Hasi he played a key role in the remarkable 2014 title win, and teammates described him as the natural locker‑room morale maker who could defuse conflicts and rally the group. Kouyaté will not be on the pitch against the Rode Duivels on Wednesday, but his behind‑the‑scenes influence could become one of the decisive factors for Senegal’s World Cup campaign.
