Saibari’s number 34 at Bayern: a tribute to Nouri’s fight

Ismael Saibari will wear number 34 at Bayern Munich, a tribute to his friend Abdelhak Nouri, who has been unable to move independently since a 2017 collapse, while Saibari embarks on a contract that runs to mid‑2031 and a €55 million transfer fee.

Saibari, 25, is an attacker‑midfielder. He chose number 34 to honour Nouri, whose last jersey at Ajax also bore that number.

Nouri collapsed in the summer of 2017 during an Ajax training match against Werder Bremen. He survived but has been unable to move independently since.

On Bayern’s website Saibari said, "Hij heeft het overleefd, maar kan zich sindsdien niet meer zelfstandig bewegen". He added, "Ik steun hem door nummer 34 te dragen, dat was zijn laatste rugnummer."

Saibari told in November that he has a strong bond with Nouri’s family. He said, "Dat is mooi, natuurlijk. Ik draag nummer 34 natuurlijk voor die jongen. Wat er met hem is gebeurd is vreselijk. Maar ik doe het ook voor de familie. Ze houden zich goed staande en daar helpt het geloof ook bij."

Saibari explained, "Als ik bij hem ben, probeer ik grapjes met hem te maken en daar kan hij wel om lachen, dus dat is mooi. Als hij mijn naam hoort, begint hij al te lachen. Dat vind ik leuk. Ik hoop dat hij met die positieve energie beter gaat worden."

Saibari signed his contract with Bayern Munich on Wednesday, committing until mid‑2031. Bayern paid PSV €55 million, including bonuses, for the transfer.

The gesture links Saibari’s new chapter at the German record‑champion with Nouri’s enduring struggle. It underscores how personal bonds can shape decisions in elite football.
