Real Madrid's squad size sparks urgent exit drive

Real Madrid have completed four signings – Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konate, Bernardo Silva and Denzel Dumfries – swelling the first‑team roster to 27 players if midfielder Thiago Pitarch is counted, prompting manager Jose Mourinho to prioritize off‑loading before the preseason training begins on 13 July. The influx of new talent has left Real Madrid facing an overbooking dilemma, with the squad now at 27 members. The club has already confirmed the departure of Dani Ceballos, opening the door for further exits. Seven additional players are listed as available for transfer: Fran Garcia, Raul Asencio, Eduardo Camavinga, Aurelien Tchouameni, Brahim Diaz, Franco Mastantuono and Gonzalo Garcia. Mourinho has indicated he will evaluate each prospect personally before reaching a decision. The Portuguese coach plans to conduct these assessments once preseason training commences on 13 July. Only four first‑team shirt numbers remain unassigned – 2, 4, 9 and 25 – excluding Ceballos’ vacated 19. The number 9 is expected to be claimed by Endrick upon his return from a loan spell at Lyon. Despite Mourinho still seeks a new centre‑back and a midfielder, the priority appears to be clearing space. Consequently, news of further departures is likely to surface before any additional arrivals. Diario AS Real Madrid have made it clear they will finalise several exit operations before pursuing new signings. The club’s strategy reflects an urgent need to balance squad size with the upcoming 2026‑27 campaign.
