Real Madrid's centre‑back gap drives pursuit of Arsenal’s William Saliba

🇪🇸

Real Madrid’s defensive line remains unsettled despite securing Ibrahima Konate, prompting the club to seek an additional centre‑back before the summer window closes. Targeting Arsenal’s William Saliba, the Spaniards aim to plug a long‑standing gap in their back‑four and to reinforce their ambitions for domestic and European trophies.

Head coach Jose Mourinho has asked for a further defensive option to be added to his squad. At present, German defender Nico Schlotterbeck and Italian centre‑back Alessandro Bastoni feature on Real Madrid’s shortlist.

The club’s centre‑back area has been a concern for at least two years. During that period, Real Madrid have been linked with numerous potential signings.

Among the targets, William Saliba stands out as the most intriguing for the sporting department. Arsenal, however, have made clear they have no intention of selling the French defender at this stage.

France legend Marcel Desailly expressed optimism, saying, “I hope that William Saliba will one day wear the Real Madrid shirt. He has a contract with Arsenal for the next, I don’t know, four years. But he’s young, so why not? The door is open, and all the best players want to play for Real Madrid at some point in their career. The door is open. But not now. Not now. He’s the best central defender, so things are the way they are today.” Desailly made the comments while discussing potential transfers.

Saliba would be a dream signing for Real Madrid and has indicated he would welcome a move to the Bernabeu. Nevertheless, he remains very happy at Arsenal, making a near‑term departure unlikely.

Real Madrid’s defensive woes may not be resolved by the arrivals of Konate and a single additional centre‑back. Consequently, the club retains scope for a future acquisition such as Saliba.
