Rangnick lauds Spain’s depth and US World Cup setup as benchmark

🇦🇹

Austria fell 3-0 to Spain at the World Cup in the United States, prompting a stunned reaction from Austrian coach Ralf Rangnick. The German manager praised Spain’s performance, calling the Spaniards the most likely candidates for the overall tournament title.

Rangnick explained that the draw had already hinted at a possible clash with Spain, saying, “We were in the toughest group and realized we would have to exceed ourselves.” He added that Austria needed a weaker day from Spain, which “did not happen.”

The Austrian coach highlighted the depth of the Spanish bench, noting that the substitutes maintained the same level as the starters. He also pointed out that no Real Madrid player featured in Spain’s starting eleven, underscoring the squad’s overall quality.

Rangnick described Spain’s positional play as a near‑unstoppable machine in possession and praised their aggressive counter‑pressing. He suggested that, if they sustain this level, “we may have watched the future world champion today.”

Although Lamine Yamal was named Man of the Match, Rangnick singled out Rodri as the best player on the field. He said it was his first time seeing Rodri so closely at a final tournament and called the performance “exceptionally complete.”

Rangnick also lauded the World Cup’s organization in the United States, describing the stadiums as “truly impressive” and the logistics—from hotel to bus to plane—efficiently managed with police escorts. He called the tournament a benchmark for future editions, with a high level both on and off the pitch.

Rangnick’s remarks underline the high standards set by both Spain’s squad and the United States’ tournament organization.
