Mourinho Fails to Lead Benfica into Champions, Sporting Wins 3-0

🇵🇹 17 May 2026

José Mourinho's attempt to qualify Benfica for the Champions League ended in disappointment as the Portuguese side missed out, while Sporting CP secured second place in the Primeira Liga with a 3-0 victory over Gil Vicente.

Mourinho had hoped to achieve Champions qualification before returning to the Real Madrid bench, but the season's final round left Benfica outside the top two spots.

Sporting's win at the José Alvalade stadium featured first‑half goals from Eduardo Quaresma and league top scorer Luis Suárez, who has tallied 28 goals this campaign.

Morten Hjulmand added a third goal in stoppage time to seal the comprehensive triumph. The late strike capped a dominant performance by Sporting.

The three‑nil result ensured Sporting maintained their position in second place on the league table.

Benfica's failure means the club will not compete in the Champions League next season, leaving Mourinho's objective unfulfilled.

Sporting will look ahead to the remaining fixtures, aiming to challenge the league leaders and secure a European spot.
