Louth’s 14-man fightback stuns Monaghan in All-Ireland thriller

Louth secured an All-Ireland semi-final place for the first time since 1957 with a dramatic 0-27 to 2-18 victory over Monaghan at Croke Park. The win came despite playing over an hour with 14 men after midfielder Sean Callaghan was sent off in the seventh minute.

Monaghan began brightly, racing to a 0-4 to 0-0 lead inside the opening exchanges. Conor McCarthy, Andrew Woods and Aaron Carey combined to put the Ulster side ahead, but Louth’s early setback arrived when Callaghan received a straight red card for a high shoulder challenge on Carey.

Louth responded immediately, with James Maguire and Sam Mulroy getting their side off the mark before Dara McDonnell restored parity. Craig Lennon then had a gilt-edged chance to score a goal, but Rory Beggan’s replacement, under-20 goalkeeper Jamie Mooney, produced a fine save to deny him.

Monaghan took advantage of the momentum swing, with Stephen O’Hanlon setting up Oisin McGorman to score the opening goal. Louth, however, hit back with five unanswered points before Ciaran Downey’s long-range effort gave them a 0-12 to 1-7 lead at half-time.

The second half saw Louth extend their advantage, with Dara McDonnell and Kieran McArdle extending the lead to four points. Jack McCarron finally broke his silence with a Monaghan free, but Louth responded with four more unanswered scores to build a five-point cushion with 20 minutes remaining.

Monaghan fought back gamely. McCarron’s second yellow card and Stephen Mooney’s cross led to O’Hanlon’s goal, leveling the game entering the final quarter. Tadhg McDonnell equalised again, but Louth answered with Ciaran Byrne’s quickfire double before Ryan Burns sealed the win.

Monaghan’s campaign ended with Rory Beggan ruled out before throw-in, forcing Jamie Mooney into senior inter-county debut. Louth, now joined by Kerry and Mayo in the semi-finals, will face their next challenge in two weeks’ time.

Louth’s line-up included Niall McDonnell in goal, with Emmet Carolan, Donal McKenny, Daire Nally, Conal McKeever, Dara McDonnell, Craig Lennon, Conor Early, Sean Callaghan, James Maguire, Sam Mulroy, Conor Grimes, Kieran McArdle, Ciaran Downey and Ryan Burns. Substitutes Tadgh McDonnell, Paul Matthews, Tommy Durnin, Ciaran Byrne and Ciaran Keenan all featured.

Monaghan fielded Rory Beggan in goal, with Ryan Wylie, Killian Lavelle, Dylan Byrne, Dessie Ward, Ryan O’Toole, Conor McCarthy, Michael McCarville, Oisin McGorman, Aaron Carey, Michael Bannigan, Stephen O’Hanlon, Jack McCarron, Andrew Woods and Ryan McAnespie. Substitutes Stephen Mooney, Max Maguire, Darragh McElearney, David Garland and Robbie Hanratty came on during the match.

Referee Sean Hurson of Tyrone oversaw the chaotic quarter-final, which saw Monaghan exit the championship without Ulster representation in the semi-finals for the first time since 2016.
