Liverpool’s winger hunt pivots to Barcola as Diomande talks stall

🇬🇧

Liverpool’s search for a new winger has intensified after their £86 million bid for RB Leipzig forward Yan Diomande stalled, prompting the club to turn its attention to Paris Saint‑Germain’s 23‑year‑old Bradley Barcola, whose contract runs for two more years this summer.

Liverpool have spent much of the transfer window assessing wide attacking options as they plan for the future. The club’s recruitment focus reflects a need to refresh the flank positions ahead of the new season.

Paris Saint‑Germain are now in active discussions with RB Leipzig over Yan Diomande after the teenager indicated a preference for the French champions. News reporter Amar Mehta said, “Paris Saint‑Germain are in talks with RB Leipzig over a move for Liverpool target Yan Diomande.” He added, “ News understands the teenager has indicated a preference to join the European and French champions.”

Liverpool were prepared to offer £86 million for Diomande, but Leipzig are seeking a significantly higher fee, leaving negotiations at an impasse. The German side’s valuation means a transfer cannot proceed until PSG and Leipzig agree a fee.

PSG have already secured a contract with Diomande that runs until 2031, giving the French champions control over his future. The contract length underscores why any move away requires PSG’s agreement.

With Diomande’s situation uncertain, Bradley Barcola has emerged as one of Liverpool’s leading alternatives. The 23‑year‑old PSG winger is quick over short and long distances, comfortable on either flank, and capable of beating defenders one‑on‑one. His age aligns with Liverpool’s recent recruitment pattern of targeting players in their early twenties.

Barcola’s future at Paris Saint‑Germain has become less certain after frustrations over his role in the biggest matches, including the Champions League final victory over Arsenal. Reports suggest he could consider leaving the French champions this summer if playing‑time concerns remain after his World Cup duty with France.

PSG would ideally retain Barcola but are understood to be open to a sale should the winger desire a fresh challenge and a club meets their valuation. With two years remaining on his contract, PSG hold a strong negotiating position and are under no financial pressure to sell.

Liverpool’s recruitment team will need to balance quality and cost, acknowledging that missing out on Diomande may be frustrating but redirecting resources toward an established international could prove equally attractive. The transfer race remains open, with Manchester City also monitoring Diomande, while Liverpool will watch the outcome of the PSG‑Leipzig talks and assess Barcola’s availability later in the window.
