Liverpool’s wide‑forward hunt stalls as Diomande deal falls through

🇬🇧

Liverpool’s urgent need for a new wide‑forward has turned into a costly setback after the club’s pursuit of Yan Diomande collapsed, leaving Anfield with a glaring gap on the flank and forcing the Reds to rethink their summer recruitment strategy.

Lewis Steele told Trev Downey that Liverpool were confident they'd secure Diomande, speaking daily with his camp and Richard Hughes. Steele also accused the agent Rock Nation of manipulating the negotiations. “I think Liverpool have been played by the agent to be honest,” he said.

Steele explained that RB Leipzig have every right to demand massive money and are holding a strong position in the market. He added that Liverpool’s first bid revealed their hand, allowing selling clubs to ask for an extra £20 million.

Bradley Barcola emerged as the player Liverpool admire after the Diomande disappointment. Steele believes Barcola will likely leave PSG and may prefer Arsenal. “I do think he probably will end up leaving PSG,” he added.

Steele noted Liverpool are not as glamorous an option as they were twelve months ago, reducing their pull on targets. He recalled that Liverpool had groundwork on Barcola last summer, similar to the effort on Diomande. “They’ve lost out on their main target,” he said.

Overall, Steele assessed the window as “one nil down” after the Diomande setback. He emphasized Liverpool will not panic‑buy and will stick to their recruitment principles. The club now faces inflated fees and must identify a suitable replacement before the season progresses.
