Liverpool eye Lucas Bergvall as Tottenham’s £100m gamble backfires

🇬🇧

At Anfield, the pre-season buzz is already building. Liverpool have made two new arrivals in Andoni Iraola and Victor Munoz, but the fifth-place finish still lingers. The Reds need reinforcements—and fast. Meanwhile, in North London, Lucas Bergvall’s future is suddenly up for grabs after the Sweden midfielder asked to leave Tottenham. The request follows Spurs’ £185 million double signing of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, which has left Bergvall and Archie Gray struggling for minutes. News reported that Bergvall wants to leave, though the club insists he will stay this summer. The midfielder is pushing for a move to secure regular football in his favoured No 8 role, and his exit could hand Liverpool a rare opportunity to land a Premier League-ready talent without a premium fee.

Tottenham’s summer spending spree has backfired on Bergvall. The club paid just £8 million for him in 2024, a bargain in today’s inflated market. Since then, he has made 78 appearances, mostly in midfield. But the arrivals of Fernandes and Tonali—costing £185 million combined—have pushed Bergvall down the pecking order. His request to leave suggests he no longer sees a path to regular football under Roberto de Zerbi. The situation has created a ripple effect at Spurs, with reporting that Bergvall has been told he will not be leaving this summer despite his wishes.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are in desperate need of midfield upgrades. Alexis Mac Allister’s future remains uncertain after a poor 2025-26 season, despite his strong performances at the 2026 World Cup. The Argentinian’s erratic form at Liverpool has frustrated supporters, and his potential sale could free up funds. Bergvall, who has been linked with a move to Nottingham Forest, would offer a cheaper alternative to plug the gap. Forest are reportedly willing to meet a £45 million fee plus a sell-on clause, a figure in line with Brighton’s recent outlay for Luka Vuskovic.

The timing could not be better for Liverpool. Bergvall’s exit request coincides with their pre-season preparations, giving them a clear window to negotiate. Clubs across England, Spain, Italy, and Germany are monitoring the situation, but Liverpool’s need and financial flexibility make them the most likely suitors. If Bergvall secures regular football elsewhere, Spurs will have little choice but to accept a cut-price deal rather than risk losing him for nothing next year.

For Liverpool, Bergvall represents more than just a squad upgrade. He could be the long-term successor to Mac Allister, offering stability and experience in midfield. The Reds have already made two key appointments in Iraola and Munoz, but their fifth-place finish demands more. A Bergvall deal would signal a shift in their transfer strategy—prioritising smart, targeted signings over big-money gambles.
