Free transfer fuels Real Madrid’s defence rebuild, Petit backs Konate

🇫🇷

A free transfer sees Ibrahima Konate join Real Madrid, becoming the fourth new signing as the club prepares for the new season, while former France star Emmanuel Petit publicly declares his belief that the defender possesses the quality to thrive at the Bernabeu.

Konate arrived at Real Madrid on a free transfer after his contract with Liverpool expired last season. He is expected to serve as a direct replacement for David Alaba, who also left the club as a free agent.

Former France international Emmanuel Petit said Konate endured a difficult season off the pitch. Petit added that the entire Liverpool defence was struggling during that period.

Petit warned that signing for Real Madrid, with the pressure and defensive issues they face, means a player must perform from the very first moment. He emphasized the immediate expectations placed on the new defender.

According to Petit, Konate is joining probably the biggest club in the world, which will be difficult. Nevertheless, Petit believes Konate has the necessary quality and expressed his personal confidence in him.

Konate was an undisputed starter at Liverpool for years, anchoring their back line. His move to Real Madrid therefore represents a significant step up in his career.

At the World Cup, Konate has barely featured for France, making only a brief cameo in the group stage. France, however, have been in dominant form, topping their group and progressing comfortably into the Round of 16. They will meet Paraguay in that next round.

Coach Didier Deschamps has preferred William Saliba, Dayot Upamecano and Maxence Lacroix in the heart of the defence, leaving Konate on the periphery. Real Madrid’s activity, with four new signings already, underscores a busy market as the club seeks to reinforce its squad ahead of the new campaign.
