FC Utrecht’s midfield plans stall as Zechiël’s move fades
On a quiet Thursday afternoon, FC Utrecht confirmed that extending midfielder Gjivai Zechiël’s stay in the Domstad for another year has become unattainable, as technical director Jordy Zuidam’s hopes for a fresh loan deal were dashed by LOSC Lille had placed a bid on the Feyenoord‑owned player, according to the Algemeen Dagblad.
Zechiël arrived in Utrecht on loan from Feyenoord last season and quickly became a standout in the midfield. His performances were described as excellent by club officials.
Technical director Jordy Zuidam expressed a desire to secure a new loan agreement with Feyenoord to retain the midfielder. He indicated that keeping Zechiël was a priority for the club’s midfield plans.
However, LOSC Lille reportedly submitted a bid to Feyenoord for Zechiël, complicating any further loan extension. The French club’s interest effectively removed Utrecht from the running for the player.
Joris van Overeem has been identified as Utrecht’s potential replacement in midfield following the departure of Can Bozdogan. Van Overeem, who spent four years at Utrecht, is currently contracted with Heerenveen. Negotiations between the clubs remain distant on both valuation and contract terms.
Can Bozdogan’s exit leaves a vacancy that prompted the search for a new midfielder. His experience in the Eredivisie could provide the stability Utrecht seeks.
Midfielder Zidane Iqbal returned to Utrecht after representing Iraq at the World Cup. The club has yet to decide whether he will remain for the upcoming season.
With both the Zechiël and Van Overeem options uncertain, Utrecht faces a midfield overhaul ahead of the new campaign.
