FC Twente's bold move: signing World Cup striker Weghorst

Thirty‑three‑year‑old Dutch striker Wout Weghorst leaves Ajax to join FC Twente on a free transfer, signing a two‑year deal in Enschede as he heads to the World Cup with the Netherlands national team. The former Ajax forward, who amassed 52 caps and 14 goals for Oranje, arrives as a free agent. Weghorst spent the previous two seasons with Ajax before completing his move as a free agent. The two‑year contract marks his first permanent return to Dutch football after a spell abroad. His foreign adventures included spells at VfL Wolfsburg, Burnley, Besiktas, Manchester United and Hoffenheim. Those experiences added to a career that began in the Netherlands. Born in Borne, Weghorst played his youth football at amateur club NEO before breaking through at Heracles Almelo. He later represented FC Emmen and AZ in the Dutch league. The quote underscores the club’s enthusiasm for the signing. The statement highlights the perceived rarity of acquiring a player of his pedigree.
