Celtic win race for Arsenal‑linked teen keeper Warren Lyall
Celtic have signed 16‑year‑old goalkeeper Warren Lyall from Dundee, securing his first professional contract after a two‑week trial with Arsenal in February. The Scotland youth international, born 10 December 2009, will join Celtic’s B team, with the club paying the required compensation.
Celtic overcame interest from other clubs to secure Lyall, who had several options after being on Arsenal’s radar following training with the Premier League champions earlier this year. The Scottish side paid the required compensation to Dundee for the 16‑year‑old’s transfer.
Lyall spent two weeks at Arsenal in February, training with the under‑18 squad and featuring in a match for the under‑15 side. His time with the London club highlighted his ability to compete above his age group.
At Dundee, Lyall regularly played above his age bracket, featuring for the under‑18s and the reserve team. The Dundee youth system had already integrated him into senior reserve football.
Internationally, Lyall has represented Scotland up to the under‑17 level, keeping a clean sheet in a European Championship qualifying win over England. He also started in a development tournament in Portugal, where Scotland’s under‑17s defeated the hosts 3‑2. These performances underline his experience against strong opposition despite his youth.
Celtic also extended the contract of former Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade‑Chamberlain, who signed a short‑term deal in February after five months without a club. His deal now runs until the end of next season, and he has made 12 appearances for Celtic, scoring two goals and adding an SPL title and Scottish Cup to his extensive trophy cabinet. His honours include a Premier League title, four FA Cups, a League Cup, a Turkish Cup, a Champions League, a UEFA Super Cup and a FIFA Club World Cup.
