World Cup

Capello crowns Lautaro the perfect Robin to Messi’s Batman

Fabio Capello, speaking after the World Cup group stage closed, said Lautaro Martinez is the ideal sidekick for Lionel Messi, describing him as more of a Robin than a Batman. He noted Messi’s six group‑stage goals, a tally that would have won the Golden Boot in ten of the last twelve tournaments. Capello highlighted that the Inter striker adapts to a supporting role for Argentina, contrasting it with his usual attacking duties in Italy. He called Martinez a “top player” who sacrifices a lot for Messi, running and pressing to create space. The former Italy coach praised France’s attacking line, naming Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise and Desire Doue as starters and likening them to Pele’s Brazil. He added that Marcus Thuram, Bradley Barcola and Jean‑Philipe Mateta are relegated to understudy roles. Capello stressed that despite France’s firepower, the 39‑year‑old Messi has dominated the tournament so far. He said Messi’s class “overshadows his age” and that the Argentine captain “doesn’t run much, but he’s always there at the right time.” The interview with La dello Sport featured Capello’s remark that “Messi is Messi, but France’s attack is in a different category.” He also described Messi as “the genius who walks,” emphasizing his relentless determination. Capello explained that Argentina coach Scaloni prefers Lautaro Martinez over Julian Alvarez, noting that the latter is already attracting interest from European superpowers. This selection underscores Martinez’s importance in the national setup. Photo captions from the tournament show Martinez celebrating a second‑goal with Messi after a qualifier win over Bolivia on 15 October 2024 in Buenos Aires, and again after scoring against Jordan on 27 June 2026 in Arlington, Texas. Both images illustrate the duo’s on‑field chemistry.
