Bloomfield's disappointment underscores Oxford United's brief revival
Former Oxford United manager Matt Bloomfield said he is disappointed after being dismissed in June, despite improving the team's points per game from 0.88 to 1.19 and tripling clean sheets from two to six at the club, during his tenure.
Oxford United appointed former Arsenal and Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey as Bloomfield's successor. Ramsey will take over a side that had shown statistical improvement under the 42‑year‑old manager.
The U's were relegated to League One last season, finishing with 47 points in 22nd place. They ended four points behind 21st‑placed West Bromwich Albion.
Bloomfield told the League Managers Association, “Despite being unable to make up the points deficit we inherited, I'm proud of the players, coaching staff and tireless work we put in to turn the season around – the players gave everything, and I believe that if we had longer together, the outcome would have been different.” Bloomfield, 42, emphasized the collective effort of the squad.
He added, “Naturally, I'm disappointed not to be taking things forward. I was excited to continue this work and implement our clear vision to evolve the playing style and move the club forward.” His statement was released to the League Managers Association.
Ramsey now faces the task of building on the progress achieved last year. The new manager inherits a side that increased its points per game and clean‑sheet record under Bloomfield.
