Alaba bids farewell to Real Madrid, eyes new European adventure

🇦🇹

David Alaba, whose contract with Real Madrid expired at the end of last season, reflected on his tenure after Austria’s 2-1 defeat to Spain in the World Cup round of 32, describing his years in the Spanish capital as “wonderful memories” despite an injury‑hit final spell.

Alaba featured in 132 competitive matches for Real Madrid. During that spell he collected two Champions League trophies and two La Liga crowns.

He admitted that a serious knee injury followed by muscle problems disrupted his rhythm in his last seasons. The defender said the lack of consistency was a direct result of those setbacks.

“Of course, the end was difficult. First, the serious knee injury, then some muscle problems prevented me from having the consistency and rhythm I would have liked,” Alaba said. He added that he now looks ahead, saying “Ultimately, I only have wonderful memories, and now we’ll see what the future holds: all we can do is wait.”

Alaba is currently a free agent and has not ruled out any destination. He expressed a desire to remain at the highest possible level, stating he is “open to everything, without ruling anything out.”

Italian sides Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan have been linked with a possible move for the Austrian international. Premier League clubs and Saudi Arabian teams have also been reported to have shown interest.

Despite the challenges, Alaba said he is grateful to Real Madrid for the opportunities the club provided. He highlighted that his time in Madrid was a “great success” and a pivotal stage in his career.
