Xavi’s squad rebuild challenges Koeman’s past exclusion of Veerman

As Xavi Hernández prepares his first Netherlands squad, the shadow of Ronald Koeman‑beslissing’ looms large, highlighting a stark contrast between the former coach’s exclusion and the new boss’s potential recall for the upcoming international window.

Bondscoach Xavi Hernández has roughly a month left to assemble his inaugural Oranje-selectie. The chance that PSV midfielder (PSV-middenvelder) Joey Veerman returns under his reign is described as realistic.

Veerman featured in the 2024 EK but was substituted before halftime against Austria (Oostenrijk). That early change marked the end of his involvement in that tournament.

After the EK, his relationship with then‑national team manager Ronald Koeman deteriorated. The Dutch (Nederlands) midfielder vanished from the squad and missed the summer World Cup (WK-uitschakeling).

From Koeman’s exclusion to Xavi’s opportunity

Since the World Cup elimination, Koeman has left his position and Xavi has taken over as national team coach. Meanwhile, Veerman is on the brink of a move to Borussia Dortmund.

According to Perez, the Dortmund transfer could bring PSV about €22 million. He added that if Xavi favours a player who performs at a higher level, that player will be Veerman.

Veerman’s Dortmund move and national team prospects

PSV saw several outgoing deals fail this summer, yet Veerman appears set to sign with Dortmund. Eindhovens Dagblad reported on Monday evening that everything points to him training with Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday and that the transfer is completed.

The midfielder will sign a five‑season contract with the German club. The first Netherlands match of the new cycle is scheduled for 24 September against Germany, and Xavi will decide whether Veerman makes the squad – a possibility described as very realistic.
