Villa's goalkeeping crossroads: Martinez in limbo as Suzuki arrives

Villa's goalkeeping crossroads: Martinez in limbo as Suzuki arrives

Facing a squad that must shed age and wage bills, Aston Villa need a new first‑choice goalkeeper as the Premier League season opens at Brighton on Sunday. The 33‑year‑old Argentine, Emi Martinez, remains in limbo after a £30 million deal for Zion Suzuki from Parma promises to replace him.

Financial and squad overhaul

Villa have been open to selling Martinez to reduce the average age of their squad. Martinez is one of the club’s top earners, and the board wants to improve their finances after high‑profile exits. Morgan Rogers left for Chelsea for £117 million, while Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne were also sold, helping the club meet UEFA and Premier League financial regulations. The plan aligns with manager Unai Emery’s project to refresh the roster.

Martinez has made 256 appearances for Aston Villa over six seasons, as documented by Getty Images]. The Argentine became a World Cup winner while at Villa and has twice been voted the world’s best goalkeeper. Despite a fractured finger sustained in the warm‑up before the Europa League final win over Freiburg in May, there were no doubts over his ability, and he remains under contract until 2029. He also helped Unai Emery secure the Europa League trophy, ending a 30‑year trophy drought.

Juventus deal collapse

Yet the proposed move to Juventus fell through because the clubs could not agree a fee. Juventus instead pursued Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario on loan with a non‑mandatory £8.6 million purchase option, slightly cheaper than the £10 million Villa were hoping for. Villa’s openness to selling Martinez was not driven by doubts about his performance. The club held out for a fee closer to £10 million, reflecting his market value.

Earlier this summer, director of football operations Damian Vidagany insisted Martinez would remain, saying: "The goalkeeper's future is settled. He is staying with us, and we have no intention of letting him go this summer," Vidagany told 365 Scores. "The team needs his efforts and extensive experience, and he is a very important element in our project for next season. All the news published by the media about his departure to Juventus does not reflect the club's true position. Martinez is a very important player for us, and we expect him to continue delivering his outstanding performances alongside his team‑mates."

Suzuki arrival and timeline

Zion Suzuki is due to join Villa from Parma for about £30 million, expected to be the No 1 goalkeeper for the next decade. Suzuki turns 24 on Friday, and Villa will start the Premier League campaign at Brighton on Sunday with his arrival imminent. The transfer window closes on 1 September, while Saudi Arabia’s window remains open until 12 October and Turkey’s until 4 September, leaving alternative options for Martinez.

Villa now must decide whether to secure a route out for Martinez or retain him as an expensive asset. His future remains uncertain as the club navigates its financial and squad‑building objectives.
