United's midfield boost masks lingering left‑side concerns

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·
Manchester United have signed Andrey Santos from Chelsea, adding a midfield option as they continue to reshape their squad. The signing follows a stalled attempt for Atalanta's Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson and a failed bid for West Ham's Mateus Fernandes, underscoring United's busy transfer window. United view Santos as a versatile midfielder who can bolster depth after the departure of other options. The club also signals intent to strengthen the middle of the park by targeting Aston Villa's Youri Tielemans. Gaz Drinkwater warned that United must address the left side of the pitch. "Left-back is a big one. Luke Shaw did very well last season and if he has the same season again then we don't need a left-back - but he's not going to, is he? And I'm not sure about his back‑up," he said. A stalled attempt for Atalanta's Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson collapsed after his medical, despite a deal agreed in June. United also missed out on West Ham's Mateus Fernandes after Tottenham's bid was not matched. Earlier in the window Manchester City secured United's top target Elliot Anderson. Drinkwater added that United lack a left‑winger unless Marcus Rashford stays, even though he commands a large salary. A centre‑back is also required while Matthijs de Ligt remains out with injury. Chelsea will lose Santos, and Aston Villa could see Tielemans depart if United finalise their offer. The analysis was aired on BBC Sounds.
