Turkish FA bets on Anthony Taylor to overhaul elite refereeing

The Turkish Football Federation announced that former Premier League referee Anthony Taylor, 47, will take charge as its new director of elite refereeing. The appointment was revealed weeks after Taylor stepped down from officiating.

Taylor’s résumé spans twenty years, during which he oversaw 668 domestic matches. His two‑decade experience underpins the federation’s ambition to raise officiating standards.

He also officiated at Euro 2020 and the 2022 and 2026 World Cups. These major tournaments add international credibility to his new role.

Taylor announced his retirement last month, saying the intense pressure and constant scrutiny of elite‑level officiating made it the right moment to step aside. He said he was “delighted” to take up the role and looks forward to the challenge.

His career began in the Premier League in 2010. Over two decades he built a reputation across English and international football by handling major tournaments.

Trinity Chambers confirmed the appointment to the Press Association, with barrister Fraser Williamson acting on Taylor’s behalf. Williamson praised Taylor’s achievements, stating they “speak for themselves” and called the post an exciting opportunity.

In his new role, Taylor is tasked with steering the strategic and technical development of elite refereeing for the Turkish Football Federation. His mandate includes raising match officials’ standards and aligning the programme with UEFA and FIFA requirements.

The appointment arrives amid a turbulent period for Turkish refereeing, which has been grappling with a betting scandal that surfaced last autumn and prompted a federation investigation. The Turkish Football Federation hopes the new director will help restore confidence and stability in its refereeing structures.

Howard Webb, chief refereeing officer at Pro Ref, described Taylor as “one of the best and most successful officials that English football has ever produced”. UEFA referees’ chief Roberto Rosetti lauded Taylor’s handling of Christian Eriksen’s cardiac arrest during a Euro 2020 match, calling him “perfect” and “amazing”.
