Tottenham and Manchester United vie for West Ham ace Mateus Fernandes

The Sun reported that Tottenham Hotspur are set to rival Manchester United for West Ham United ace Mateus Fernandes. Both clubs are reportedly preparing offers as the transfer window approaches.

Fernandes impressed in the centre of West Ham’s midfield last campaign, although the Hammers failed to avoid relegation from the Premier League. He contributed five goals and five assists across 42 matches on all fronts.

His current contract with West Ham runs until the summer of 2030 at the London Stadium. Tottenham would therefore need to present a convincing offer to secure his services this off‑season.

De Zerbi’s scouting notes describe Fernandes as a strong tackler who can win possession inside his own half and clear danger when required. The Portuguese midfielder also possesses long‑range shooting power, vision to create chances and the stamina to operate as a box‑to‑box, holding or number‑ten midfielder.

A photograph taken by Clive Rose shows Fernandes reacting during the Premier League match between Brentford and West Ham United at Gtech Community Stadium on 2 May 2026 in Brentford, England. The image underscores his experience in high‑pressure Premier League fixtures.

De Zerbi is expected to add depth and quality to Tottenham Hotspur’s midfield, with Fernandes capable of fighting for a regular first‑team spot at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. At 21, his development trajectory suggests he could help Spurs compete across all competitions in the coming years.

Given his familiarity with the Premier League, Fernandes is unlikely to need a long adaptation period at the North London club. Consequently, it is logical for Roberto De Zerbi to pursue the midfielder later this year.
