Stoke Agina's loan to Forest Green: a step toward senior growth

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Forest Green Rovers have signed defender Sydney Agina on loan from Championship side Stoke until January, and the 18‑year‑old academy player has also agreed a new two‑year contract extension to stay with the Potters. The announcement, released via Getty Images, gives the young Kenyan international a chance to gain regular first‑team football at a competitive level.

Stoke director of football Jonathan Walters explained that further exposure to first‑team football at a good level, on a consistent basis, is the logical next step for Agina. The loan was announced in a release tagged Images]. Forest Green view the loan as an opportunity to bolster their defensive options with a player accustomed to Championship intensity. The club believes the consistent playing time will aid Agina’s development and benefit the team’s campaign.

Agina made five league appearances for Stoke in the closing stages of last season. Those outings gave him a taste of senior football in England’s second tier.

He earned his first international cap for Kenya in a friendly last month. The appearance highlights his rising profile on the international stage.

For Forest Green, the loan provides a young, versatile defender for the remainder of the season. Stoke retain long‑term control through the new contract while allowing Agina to develop through regular matches. Both clubs anticipate that the experience will accelerate the Kenyan’s progress and prepare him for a larger role at the Potters next season.
