Shels' European dream stays alive as Sport watches Ajax edge ahead

A Daniel Kelly consolation goal at the Johan Cruyff Arena ensured Shelbourne will travel to Amsterdam for the first leg of next week’s UEFA Conference League third‑qualifying round, second leg, keeping the Shels’ European dream alive despite a defeat to Ajax, as reported by RTÉ Sport.

An early strike from Belgian wonderkid Mika Godts, followed by assists from Owen Wijndal and Kasper Dolberg, put the Premier Division side under pressure, leaving the Dubliners fearing the worst. John Russell’s Shels boss made two changes, dropping attackers Ali Coote and Rodrigo Freitas for winger Sean Moore and full‑back James Norris.

Ajax took the lead within six minutes, with referee Atilia Karaoglan allowing play after Milan Mbeng’s challenge on Godts was reviewed by VAR and ruled a non‑contact, resulting in a penalty that sent the ball the wrong way for Shelbourne’s goalkeeper Ed Beach.

In the second half, Ed Beach produced a string of fantastic stops, including a penalty save from Godts at the 57th minute, while Daniel Kelly’s composed finish provided Shelbourne with a consolation goal, keeping the match competitive.

Both Godts and Dolberg had further chances, and Owen Wijndal added a second Ajax goal after a cross from Steven Berghuis, but Beach’s acrobatic saves and the late Kelly strike ensured the Dubliners left with something to travel back home with.

John Russell’s side will now prepare for next Thursday’s second leg at Tolka Park, with the UEFA Conference League tie still open and the Shels’ European ambition intact despite the loss in Amsterdam.
