Seven arrests cast shadow over World Cup send‑off match in Rotterdam

🇳🇱 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Police arrested seven men suspected of assaulting Algerian football supporters on the evening of 3 June, just before the World Cup send‑off match between the Netherlands and Algeria at De Kuip in Rotterdam. The incident, captured on CCTV, prompted a nationwide stadium ban from the KNVB for the accused.

Police officers arrived at about 20:00 on Wednesday 3 June, roughly three‑quarters of an hour before kickoff, and found a stationary van near the Coen Moulijnviaduct in Rotterdam. The vehicle bore a French licence plate and contained eight Algerian supporters holding French nationality. One of the fans suffered a serious injury.

CCTV footage shows a group of men kicking and beating the supporters. The assault escalates when one victim is struck so hard that he collapses on the street and briefly loses consciousness. The video was used as evidence in the arrests.

The seven detained men range in age from 19 to 40 and come from Rotterdam, Schiedam, Capelle aan den IJssel and The Hague. Their identities have been released by the police. All are suspected of the violent act captured on camera.

At least three of the suspects must appear before an investigating judge as part of the legal process. The police have indicated that further arrests are possible.

Because the offence is classified as football‑related violence, the KNVB has imposed a nationwide stadium ban on the accused. The ban prevents them from entering any Dutch stadium for the duration specified by the federation.

The swift police response and the KNVB’s disciplinary action underline the authorities’ zero‑tolerance stance on fan violence surrounding high‑profile international fixtures in the Netherlands.
