Reiziger’s surge as Slot exits: the Netherlands' coaching dilemma

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball ·

The Dutch Football Association has dropped Arne Slot from its shortlist in Zeist, preferring a coach who wants to stay in club football, while Michael Reiziger of Jong Oranje now sits at the top of the race to become the next Oranje head coach.

Following the earlier removal of Peter Bosz, Arne Slot has now also been crossed off the Zeist list, confirming the association’s shift away from the two former managers.

Slot, currently unemployed, has said he would rather return to club football; rumours also suggest he turned down offers from AC Milan and Al‑Ahli after his departure from Liverpool FC following a difficult season.

Scheidsrechter Bas Nijhuis expressed his personal wish that Louis van Gaal could return, stating, “I am a huge fan. I would love to see Louis van Gaal back. I admire him as a person and a trainer, so it would be fantastic. But it probably will not happen.”

Louis van Gaal, who has previously been appointed national coach of the Dutch team three times, also led clubs such as Ajax, FC Barcelona and Bayern München, and most recently left his advisory role at Ajax.

Michael Reiziger currently holds the strongest credentials for the position, with his experience from Jong Oranje positioning him as the leading candidate.

With the Nations League match against Germany scheduled for September, the KNVB now faces pressure to decide quickly, as the calendar leaves little time for further deliberation.
