Red card reshapes Penybont's European hopes against Santa Coloma
A red card for Chris Venables in the second leg away saw Penybont surrender two extra‑time goals, sealing a knockout from the UEFA Conference League tie against the Andorran side Santa Coloma after the advantage built from his historic first‑ever European goal.
The dismissal erased the advantage Penybont had built after Venables' historic first‑ever European goal in the first leg. Playing away, the red card forced Bont to concede two extra‑time goals, sealing a knockout from the UEFA Conference League tie against the Andorran side Santa Coloma.
Venables opened the scoring in the first qualifying round first leg at the Brewery Field in Bridgend in 2024, delivering Penybont's inaugural goal in European competition. That strike gave the Welsh side an early lead before the tie turned hostile in the return fixture.
The Welsh midfielder recalled his mixed memories of Penybont's earlier encounter with Santa Coloma, noting that familiarity reduces the element of the unknown. He explained that both teams now have insight into each other's tactics and player behaviour.
Venables, who debuted in the Welsh top flight with Caersws in 2003, has amassed over 20 European appearances for clubs such as Aberystwyth Town, Llanelli and Bala Town. His experience spans multiple Welsh clubs and European campaigns.
His sole European tie victory came when he scored the winner for Bala against Malta's Valletta in the 2020 Europa League. That goal remains his only knockout success on the continent.
Reflecting on Penybont's recent 4‑1 aggregate defeat to Kauno Zalgiris of Lithuania, Venables stressed the difficulty of competing while out of season. He highlighted the challenge of matching in‑season opponents who are already at peak fitness.
The upcoming first leg will be staged at Cardiff City Stadium on Thursday, offering a familiar venue from Penybont's 2022 Welsh Cup final. Venables hopes a strong home crowd will boost the lads, recalling the support they received in previous European trips.
