Preston's £2m pursuit forces Charlton to weigh Campbell sale

Charlton Athletic are being urged to consider cashing in on left‑winger Tyreece Campbell as Preston North End circle a £2 million fee, a move that could free funds to plug gaps in central midfield and right‑back. The 22‑year‑old’s limited impact in the Championship and the arrival of two new left‑sided attackers have left his future in doubt.

Campbell rose through the Charlton academy and featured heavily in Nathan Jones’ 2024/25 promotion campaign, starting 37 league games and scoring seven goals as the Addicks won the League One play‑offs.

In the step up to the Championship, he made 21 starts in the first half of the season but found the net only once and saw his minutes shrink after Lyndon Dykes arrived to bolster the forward line and Luke Chambers was deployed as a left wing‑back.

The summer signings of former academy product Karlan Grant and Luton Town’s Millenic Alli have further threatened his place, putting additional pressure on the club to decide his fate.

Preston North End have renewed interest, with Alan Nixon confirming the Lancashire side are plotting a raid for the left‑sided Charlton player, echoing last year’s loan of Thierry Small to Deepdale.

Charlton fan pundit Chris Woodward told FLW, “I think it'd be sensible for Charlton to cash in on Campbell now, given the circumstances,” adding that the club cannot afford to reject decent money.

Woodward argued that a £2 million fee would be fair in today’s market – enough to reflect Campbell’s potential pace and dribbling while acknowledging he is not yet a finished product.

He also noted that Charlton’s wage bill is among the smallest in the Championship, meaning the extra funds could be used to upgrade key positions elsewhere.

Campbell has one year left on his contract after the club invoked an extension clause this summer, a situation that could signal either a lack of long‑term commitment from Charlton or the player’s desire to move.

Preston have already shown a willingness to spend this summer, smashing their transfer record with a £6 million permanent deal for Alfie Devine and previously paying around £2 million for Callum Lang.

If Charlton wait until the end of the season, they would only receive compensation for an academy‑trained player, likely less than a direct sale, and risk losing him for a lower amount next summer.
