Oldham's defensive gamble: Irish veteran Ryan Delaney signs in July

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Oldham Athletic are looking to shore up a porous defence as they rebuild for the new campaign, and the arrival of 29‑year‑old Irish centre‑back Ryan Delaney offers a seasoned option. The veteran’s experience in the English Football League is seen as a direct answer to the club’s back‑line deficiencies.

Delaney signed a one‑year contract with Oldham Athletic in July 2026, after the Irishman became a free agent when Swindon Town released him earlier that summer. The short‑term deal gives the club flexibility while providing the Irishman with regular playing time.

The former Swindon defender has featured for nine different clubs across the EFL, giving him a breadth of experience that Oldham hope will strengthen their defence. His familiarity with the league’s physical style is expected to add stability to the back line.

Delaney spent the 2025‑26 season on loan at Newport County, making 17 appearances and scoring once. His contribution helped Newport avoid relegation from League Two, demonstrating his ability to perform under pressure.

"I've been fortunate to gain a lot of experience over the years, playing in the EFL and coming through different situations at different clubs," Delaney said on the club website. The statement underscores his readiness to bring that experience to Oldham.

The one‑year contract also allows Oldham to assess Delaney’s impact before committing to a longer deal. If he adapts quickly, the Irishman could become a versatile pillar in the club’s defensive setup for the upcoming season.
