O'Reilly's two-goal heroics set stage for PFA award triumph

Manchester City full‑back Nico O'Reilly's two goals in last season's Carabao Cup final secured Manchester City the trophy and cemented his rising star status, culminating in his collection of the PFA Men's Young Player of the Year award on Tuesday at Manchester's Opera House.

Beyond the cup triumph, O'Reilly also featured in Manchester City's FA Cup victory and was part of England's squad that finished third at the World Cup. The 21‑year‑old has already become a regular feature in City’s senior squad. His brace turned the Carabao Cup final into a decisive victory for City.

Academy legacy reinforced

The award ceremony at Manchester's Opera House underscored the strength of the club's academy, as five of the past six winners have emerged from City’s youth system. Previous winners include Phil Foden, who has won the accolade twice, as well as Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers.

"Seeing Nico win the award was an incredibly proud moment for everyone connected to our academy," said academy director Thomas Krucken. He added that the success reflects the hard work of the academy staff and coaches who guided him from the Under‑9s to senior football.

Award battle highlights talent

O'Reilly edged out teammate Rayan Cherki and rivals such as Manchester United's Kobbie Mainoo, Bournemouth's Junior Kroupi, Liverpool's Rio Ngumoha and Arsenal's Max Dowman to claim the prize. The close contest reflected the depth of young talent across the Premier League.
