Milan DNA loses its legend: Franco Baresi passes at 66

AC Milan confirmed on Thursday that Italy legend Franco Baresi, the club’s iconic former captain, has died at the age of 66, a loss the Rossoneri described as a profound blow. The announcement underscored how deeply his legacy is woven into Milan DNA.

His playing career spanned two decades, during which he made 719 appearances for the red and black side. Those 719 matches cemented his status as a one‑club man.

In its official statement, AC Milan praised Baresi’s example and integrity, declaring that he is forever etched into the club’s DNA. The club also noted that his iconic number six shirt will remain a symbol of his legacy.

Baresi made his debut for AC Milan in 1977 and went on to play 20 seasons before retiring in 1997. His entire professional career was spent at the San Siro.

He captained the Rossoneri for 15 seasons, guiding them to six Serie A titles, three European Cups and UEFA Champions League trophies. His trophy haul also includes four Supercoppa Italiana titles, two UEFA Super Cups and two Intercontinental Cups.

Defensively, Baresi formed a celebrated backline alongside Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta and Mauro Tassotti. The quartet became synonymous with Milan’s defensive solidity throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

Internationally, he earned 81 caps for Italy, was part of the 1982 FIFA World Cup‑winning squad and captained the Azzurri to the 1994 World Cup final. He delivered a notable performance against Brazil after recovering from a serious knee injury.

After hanging up his boots, Baresi remained close to the club, being appointed honorary vice‑president in 2020. His number six shirt was retired in recognition of his immense contribution.

He underwent surgery in August 2025 to remove a lung nodule. His final public appearance came at San Siro during the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in February.
