Midfield surge: Why Liverpool and United chase Roma’s El Aynaoui

🇬🇧

Neil El Aynaoui, the 25‑year‑old Roma midfielder, has attracted strong interest from Liverpool Football Club and Manchester United Football Club as clubs look to bolster their midfield options.

His World Cup performances against Brazil and the Netherlands saw him repeatedly dictate the tempo, combining defensive discipline with composure in possession and impressive athleticism. Scouts across Europe noted his ability to impose rhythm against elite opposition.

While early tournament focus centred on Ayyoub Bouaddi, El Aynaoui seized the spotlight through authority, composure and consistency. He matched up against players such as Casemiro, Bruno Guimaraes, Ryan Gravenberch and Frenkie de Jong.

Roma signed him from RC Lens last summer and he featured in more than 30 matches in his first Serie A season. However, his opportunities from the start were more limited than many expected.

Liverpool Football Club, Manchester United Football Club, Chelsea Football Club, Aston Villa Football Club, Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club, AFC Bournemouth, Newcastle United Football Club, Sunderland A.F.C. and Everton Football Club have all made contact regarding his situation. Everton’s interest is notable given the Friedkin Group’s ownership links with AS Roma.

Former Marseille sporting director Mehdi Benatia said, “He’s very strong because he combines quality and quantity.” Benatia added that he had tried to sign the player for Marseille but found the cost prohibitive.

AS Roma still view El Aynaoui as a player with upside, but believe a genuine opportunity could arise should they receive the right proposal. The decision will hinge on money, squad planning and the player’s view of his role.

If a Premier League club secures his signature, they will acquire a modern central midfielder capable of covering ground and handling high‑level opponents. For Roma, a sale could provide a significant financial boost while allowing the player to enjoy more first‑team football.
