Michel cautions on new signings' readiness after Conference duel

Ajax head coach Michel contrasted the excitement surrounding his latest signings with the uncertainty of their immediate availability, noting that the Brazilian striker Marcos Leonardo and the Nigerian forward Tolu Arokodare arrived amid high expectations but may not be ready to feature for the Amsterdammers at the start of August.

Michel said he wants to say little about the fitness levels of both newcomers. His restraint underscores the club’s cautious approach to integrating new players.

Marcos Leonardo, a Brazilian, and Tolu Arokodare, a Nigerian, joined Ajax with considerable hype from supporters and media. Both were expected to boost the attacking options of the Dutch side.

The key question now is whether the duo can start for the Amsterdammers in early August. If they miss the opening weeks, the club may need to rely on existing squad depth.

The remarks came following the De Conference League-duel with FK Vojvodina. Ajax secured a result that allowed the coach to assess the squad’s condition.

"We must be patient with both players," Michel explained. "I think Leo is further along," he added, referring to Leonardo.

"Tolu has not yet trained with us," Michel said. "I do not yet know how the situation stands for him," he continued.

"We need to train both boys and make them understand our patterns and philosophy," Michel concluded. "They will both play for us and make the team better," he affirmed.
