Mayor van Oosten slams Cambuur for fireworks breach against Feyenoord

Foort van Oosten, mayor of Leeuwarden, criticised SC Cambuur for breaching the tightened stadium‑permit rules during the league match against Feyenoord, when seven Cambuur supporters were injured after fireworks entered the ground twelve minutes into a game that finished 2‑5.

The criticism is set out in a letter obtained by the Leeuwarder Courant, in which the mayor details his concerns about the club’s failure to respect the conditions imposed on the venue.

Regulation breach and injuries

During the match, massive fireworks were launched from the visitors’ stand and travelled into the adjacent home sections, causing injuries to seven Cambuur fans.

Earlier in the 2025/2026 season, similar fireworks incidents occurred at matches involving ADO Den Haag and Vitesse, prompting authorities to tighten the permit requirements for Cambuur.

One of the newly imposed conditions prohibited any fireworks from the visitors’ area from reaching other stands; the mayor says this rule was clearly violated in the Feyenoord game.

“That means the regulations have not been complied with,” Van Oosten wrote in the letter to Cambuur, underscoring his disappointment.

Club response and future measures

Cambuur, after consulting the local triangle of authorities, replied that it had adhered to the permit and is prepared to introduce extra security for the upcoming home fixture against FC Twente.

The investigation into how the fireworks entered the stadium remains unfinished, according to the mayor.

Van Oosten added that prosecutors should think “out of the box” when pursuing the perpetrators, noting: “If you see on the footage that part of the Feyenoord supporters did not cover their face, you can assume they were not the ones who threw fireworks.” He also wrote, “And since Feyenoord knows all the supporters who were there, you should be able to reach a conclusion to identify the perpetrators.”
