Marotta warns Inter cannot match Premier League spending
Inter President Beppe Marotta warned on the club’s Australian pre‑season tour that the Nerazzurri cannot bridge the financial gap with the Premier League by splurging on transfers, a caution voiced after Chelsea secured Marco Palestra and after a failed medical for Anan Khalaili.
While Premier League clubs continue to splurge, he warned that Inter must accept a different financial reality. The president said the economic gap is now evident, making it impossible for the Nerazzurri to bridge it by spending crazy amounts.
Marotta recalled that in the 1980s and 1990s Serie A was the global reference point for football. He noted that today the balance has shifted, with the Premier League now leading financially.
The Nerazzurri are currently in Australia for their pre‑season tour. During the trip Marotta sat down with Globo TV as part of his media duties. He made the comments in Italy while the squad remained in Australia.
Inter’s summer frustration intensified after Chelsea secured the signing of Marco Palestra. The transfer denied Inter a key addition to its squad.
A further blow came when Anan Khalaili failed his medical after being ready to join from Union Saint‑Gilloise. The failed move added to the list of top targets Inter missed this window.
Inter are the reigning champions of Italy, having lifted the Serie A title last season. They also captured the Coppa Italia after beating SS Lazio. Their Champions League campaign, however, ended in disappointment.
Marotta concluded that Inter’s response must rely on creativity, competence and motivation rather than sheer spending. He stressed that building a team with values, management, coaches, staff and players opposes the notion that money alone wins.
