Manchester City’s academy overhaul hinges on £2.5m Ndala move

Manchester City have identified a need to streamline their academy pipeline, and the permanent transfer of 20‑year‑old winger Joel Ndala to Cercle Brugge, valued at around £2.5 million, provides a concrete step toward that goal for the English side's long‑term development plan.

The agreement satisfies Manchester City’s strategic objective and gives Cercle Brugge a promising attacking option. It directly addresses the club’s identified need to streamline its academy pipeline.

Both clubs reached an agreement that reflects the market value of the player, with the transfer fee confirmed at approximately £2.5 million. This amount underlines the financial commitment behind the move.

Joel Ndala joined Manchester City from Port Vale at the age of ten and spent a decade within the English club’s youth system. He progressed through the academy ranks to become a notable talent in the U18 side.

In the U18 competition Ndala recorded 17 goals and eight assists across 41 appearances, highlighting his productivity at youth level. Those statistics underscored his reputation as one of the more effective attacking players in the academy.

His senior experience includes loan spells at Jong PSV, Nottingham Forest, Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday. The most recent loan at Sheffield Wednesday ended early after the club’s relegation to League One, with Ndala making eight appearances before dropping out of the side in April.

The permanent nature of the Cercle Brugge deal represents a clean break from Manchester City, offering Ndala the chance to establish himself as a regular senior player for the first time in his career. This contrasts with the temporary arrangements of his previous loan spells.

Cercle Brugge compete in the Belgian Pro League and host matches at the Jan Breydel Stadium. The Belgian environment is described as a more manageable platform for a player of Ndala’s age and profile than the English Championship clubs that previously housed him.

Ndala is an England youth international, having represented his country at U16, U17, U18 and U20 levels. Director of football Hugo Viana has been clear about which academy talents have a future at Manchester City, while Enzo Maresca has shown interest in the broader squad’s composition.

The transfer has not yet been formally confirmed by either club, and further details on the structure of the deal are expected to follow. Until official confirmation arrives, the move remains subject to finalisation.
