Man Utd’s hidden clause triggers £4m bonus for Marcus Rashford

Before Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s arrival, United automatically granted a 25 percent wage increase to any player when Champions League football was secured. That automatic uplift was embedded in the long‑term contracts of Mount and Onana in the summer of 2023, the same window when Rashford penned a new five‑year agreement.

United’s failure to qualify for Europe last season forced pay cuts across the squad. The Champions League return has now restored the original wage levels for Rashford and Mount, thanks to the clause in their contracts.

A separate bonus mechanism still exists for first‑team players, requiring participation in over 60 percent of league minutes – roughly 2,000 minutes – to trigger additional pay. Rashford and Mount meet the criteria automatically, while Onana spent the campaign on loan and Mount fell just short of the minute threshold but remains covered by his legacy clause.

Rashford currently earns about £16 million per year; the £4 million bonus lifts his total earnings to roughly £20 million annually. United must also pay Mount more than £1 million each year, whereas Onana’s wages are fully covered by Trabzonspor, meaning no extra payout for him.

Both Rashford and Onana were listed for permanent transfer, but their high wages and the activated bonuses have deterred potential buyers. After Barcelona showed interest in Rashford but declined to meet the financial terms, United appear more inclined to retain him at Old Trafford.

The unexpected outlay has squeezed United’s summer budget, limiting their ability to sign top targets. While the club secured clever deals for Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, they missed out on Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, underscoring the financial impact of the clause.

For Rashford, the clause translates into a substantial personal reward, reinforcing his status as a key England international. For Manchester United, the payment highlights the cost of legacy contracts and forces a more cautious approach in the transfer market.
