Londra’s 2029 Mondiali Atletica depends on West Ham stadium deal

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball ·

Londra has secured a pivotal agreement that could allow the city to host the 2029 Mondiali Atletica, with West Ham United agreeing to relocate its home matches from the London Stadium during the event period, while ensuring minimal disruption to the football calendar and preserving fan priorities.

The official push for the 2029 Campionati Mondiali di Atletica has begun, with Roma receiving government approval for financing guarantees and Monaco already in the running, and now Londra joining the shortlist.

These developments arrive from the British capital and also reverberate in the Città Eterna, highlighting the cross‑city impact of the bid.

According to the Times, Londra was able to submit its official candidature after striking a deal with West Ham, which consented to potentially move its fixtures to an alternative venue so that the London Stadium, publicly owned but operated under a West Ham concession, can serve as a World Championships venue.

Il West Ham United can confirm it has reached an agreement with London Stadium LLP and Athletics Ventures to include the London Stadium as a host venue in the UK‑backed bid for the 2029 Mondiali Atletica. The club stresses that fan priority remains paramount and any agreed programme will have minimal impact on the football calendar.

Before this pact, Londra’s bid was in jeopardy because West Ham was initially unwilling to relinquish its right to play at the London Stadium. After weeks of talks spanning a year, assurances were given that the athletics event would not keep West Ham away from the stadium for more than two consecutive matches, or three if a League Cup tie intervenes.

Scenarios have been modelled for both a Premier League 2029‑30 campaign with possible European fixtures and a Championship season following relegation, ensuring any match displacement can be scheduled away to protect the club’s calendar.

The British sporting community welcomed the breakthrough, recalling the 2017 athletics edition that attracted 60,000 spectators per session and sold out every session. World Athletics is expected to announce the host city for the 2029 Mondiali Atletica in September.
