Ligue clash looms: Lyon must choose European path before Sparta Prague

🇫🇷 By 4AllFootball ·

This Tuesday in Prague, Olympique Lyonnais (OL) begins its winding road to Champions League qualification against Sparta Prague, a competition it has not contested since the Final 8 of 2020.

In the midst of structural stabilisation, the Rhône‑Alpine club must very quickly decide which wood it will warm on the European stage, and Il faces a decisive choice.

Seasons follow one another but never resemble each other; Six years ago, during the Covid‑19 pandemic, Lyon flew to the Portuguese Final 8 and wrote its second‑best European story.

Six years later the team stands at the foot of a Prague mountain that appears surmountable, offering a chance to finally return to the Champions League after a long absence.

On paper OL now possesses the weapons to reach the group stage, but it must deliver a solid performance in the third‑round home leg in Prague at 20:00, then confirm its edge a week later at Groupama Stadium, before a possible playoff against Fenerbahçe (Turkey) or Sturm Graz (Austria).

The first matter to settle is Sparta Prague Un, a hurdle not to be taken lightly given the Czech side’s participation in the Champions League last season.

OL’s flight to Prague was delayed on Monday evening, and head coach Paulo Fonseca arrived without five key figures: Czech defender Pavel Šulc, new signing Mads Bidstrup (both nursing knee injuries), Khalis Merah, World Cup finalist Nicolás Tagliafico and suspended Moussa Niakhaté.

Offensive concerns also linger despite the presence of revenger Loïs Openda, compounded by recent friendly errors against Real Betis and the rivalry with Slavia Prague; Dominik Greif admitted, "We conceded goals in preparation, but maybe it was a concentration issue."

Fonseca reiterated the club’s mindset: "We play the league to qualify. The club has waited for this chance so we must give everything."

Adding intrigue, double‑agent Adam Karabec, who impressed at Lyon last season before Endrick’s arrival, now returns to Sparta in fine form, feeding information; Brian Priske, Sparta’s Danish coach, said, "He knows how the team trains, plays, prepares its matches and builds its game plans."

Les Rouge et Bleu’s direction remains pragmatic, rebuilding financially after the Textor era with deals such as Openda’s loan, Julien Duranville’s arrival and the gamble on Mads Bidstrup, while still shy of a €30 million spend. A Champions League qualification could boost the club’s market attractiveness and help offset potential summer sales of Šulc, Fofana and Nuamah.
