Ligue 1’s top scorer Esteban Lepaul could become Zidane’s surprise
Esteban Lepaul, the 26‑year‑old striker who topped Ligue 1’s scoring chart last season, is being tipped as a potential surprise for new France boss Zinédine Zidane. The Rennes forward netted 20 goals in 32 league games during the 2025‑2026 campaign, putting him on the national team’s radar.
The 26‑year‑old attacker plays for Stade Rennais, where his 20‑goal haul in 32 appearances underlines his efficiency in front of goal. His record makes him one of the most prolific French forwards in recent Ligue campaigns.
Despite that record, Lepaul has remained on the periphery of the France squad under Didier Deschamps. The former national team manager kept the Rennes striker close to the Bleus but did not grant him a regular place.
Zidane’s arrival opens a door for Lepaul
With Zinédine Zidane now at the helm of the Bleus, Lepaul can hope for a fresh chance to break into the senior side. The new coach’s reputation for trusting instinctive attackers could favour the Rennes forward’s profile.
Zidane’s France beckons: Lepaul could become the next Bleus striker
Jean‑Pierre Papin, Ballon d’Or winner in 1991, believes Lepaul possesses the qualities needed to convince the new selector. Papin, whose first name includes Pierre, describes the striker as a true “number 9 of the box”.
“We’re all waiting a bit, eager to see how it will unfold, knowing he has always scored at any level. There is no reason for it to stop. In the France team the problem is there are extraordinary players, but there are few profiles like his, a pure number 9. I think he will get his chance,” said Papin.
Competition for the number‑9 role
The France squad boasts a wealth of attacking talent, making the race for the centre‑forward spot highly competitive. Lepaul’s reputation as a pure finisher could offer Zidane a different option amid the crowded pool.
If the doors of Clairefontaine finally open for him, the next few months will determine whether the Rennes striker can translate his club form into international impact. The answer is expected in the coming months.
