Parkinson's fury over stoppage time as Wrexham miss derby win

Phil Parkinson lamented Wrexham’s lack of ruthlessness after a 98th‑minute equaliser snatched a Welsh derby win from them at Cardiff City, leaving the side frustrated by both the late goal and the six minutes of added time on the scoreboard.

Wrexham entered the encounter after finishing seventh in the Championship last season, a respectable position that raised expectations. The clash against Cardiff City was billed as a Welsh derby, adding local intensity to the fixture.

Parkinson’s side surged ahead when Kieffer Moore’s third‑minute goal struck at the Cardiff City Stadium, giving Wrexham an early lead. The rapid strike suggested a hard‑fought win to open the new Championship campaign.

Early dominance and missed chances

Wrexham created several opportunities to extend their lead, twice rattling the woodwork, yet failed to convert. Despite the pressure, they were the more threatening side for much of the match.

The deadlock was broken in the 98th minute when Rubin Colwill smashed a free‑kick into the net, erasing Wrexham’s advantage and securing a draw for Cardiff City.

“We’ve had chances to kill the game off. We haven’t taken them, the keeper’s made saves, but we haven’t really made him make a top‑class save,” Parkinson said. He added that the team could have given Cardiff problems repeatedly, but the result should have been “out of sight” according to him.

Late drama and stoppage‑time controversy

The fourth official’s board displayed six minutes of added time, a period during which George Dobson fouled Joel Colwill before Rubin Colwill capitalised. “I’m not quite sure where they got six minutes from – I’m looking forward to asking the officials about that,” Parkinson remarked.

He warned that conceding cheap free‑kicks at this level invites punishment, saying, “That’s what cost us tonight.”

“All we had to do was stay calm in that moment and we’d be talking about three points,” Parkinson concluded. The match image was supplied by Getty ImagesImage.
